Four Mexican women taking part in a witchcraft ceremony suffocated as they prepared a concoction of ammonia and smouldering herbs to drive away evil spirits in Mexico City on 14 November 1996. Three of the women were found dead of asphyxiation, the fourth died later in hospital. Philadelphia Inquirer - 16 November 1996

Egyptian farm worker Susu Borai Mohammad, 22, accidently swallored some ants when she took a swig of water. She went home and swallored some insecticide to kill the ants, but suffered diarrhoea and convulsions and died immediately after being taken to hospital in the Qena district of Cairo. When his owner collapsed with a coronary in Bonn, Otto the Rottweiler defended him against paramedics for 12 minutes. By the time they got Otto to move, the 68-year-old was dead. Still it's the thought that counts. The Guardian - 11 December 1996
